French Immersion

Welcome French Immersion Students and Parents!

French Immersion programming benefits the cognitive and social development of students, as well as their opportunities for career advancement. Research demonstrates that students who successfully complete a French Immersion program (K-12) attain functional bilingualism while doing as well as, or better than, their uni-lingual peers in the content areas of curriculum, including English Language Arts. (BC Public School Policy, French Immersion Program)

French Immersion in High School is a continuation of Early and Late French Immersion at Elementary. In grades 8, 9 and 10, students are required to take four classes in French with the option of five in grade 10. In grade 11, students take two French courses and minimum one in Grade 12.

Career Life Connections is a required course for graduation and French Immersion students will be completing their work in French.

Students that are successful in the French Immersion program will receive a bi-lingual graduation certificate – Double Dogwood in grade 12.

Students in the French Immersion program at Moscrop are presented with a range of opportunities. In grade 10 they are able to participate in the BC Québec Exchange Program, can sign up for the Explore Program as early as grade 11, and the YMCA Summer Work Exchange at the age of 16 and 17.

In addition to these larger opportunities, French Immersion students are also exposed to Language and Culture outside of the classroom. They attend plays, movies, concerts, experience French food in restaurants, and participate in oral and written contests. Students attend science fairs, social studies fairs, meet and learn from cultural guests, performers and presenters.

This year we will be adding a new course, French Leadership 9-12!

This course allows students to use and further develop their strengths in the French language while developing their communication, organizational and leadership skills within the community. For example, students will collaboratively design and implement lessons and projects for French learners in the elementary classrooms in their areas of interest. Or they may connect with francophone organisations, gain volunteer experience and practice their skills outside of the classroom. Naturally, students will also work with the Moscrop staff and student body to plan a variety of events. Students will be vetted by French teachers through an application process.

All Moscrop French Immersion courses follow the curriculum guidelines of the Education Ministry as found at: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/
